John Boles




John B. Boles has just retired as the William P. Hobby Professor of History at Rice University. He edited the Journal of Southern History for three decades, directed more than sixty doctoral students, and won a variety of teaching awards. Among his books are a college textbook on southern history, a biography of Rice’s first president, Edgar Odell Lovett, and, most recently, a biography entitled Jefferson: Architect of American Liberty. He is currently working on a book tentatively titled “Nation-Makers: Seven Men Who Shaped the Creation of the United States”.
