British Raj

Melanie Urban

The British Raj (from Hindi rāj: kingdom, realm, state, or empire) was the rule of the British Crown on the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947. Plunder and profit for England? Opportunity and benefit for India? Or, economic crisis for England and ruined civilizations for India? Our journey will begin with the rise of the East India Company (EIC), take us through the fall of the kingdoms on the subcontinent to the military rule of the English, and end at partition in 1947 after the demise of the EIC and a tumultuous 20th century.

This class will be held onsite at WIH and simulcast via Zoom.
