Don Giovanni

David Ferris, Ph.D.

Who is Don Giovanni, Mozart’s operatic version of Don Juan? Is he a comic villain or a tragic antihero? Swashbuckling libertine or serial rapist? Mozart’s protagonist barely gets to sing any arias which would reveal his character, and so he remains a cipher to us. He is surrounded by a cast of colorful characters—the enraged and vengeful Donna Anna, the obsequious but disgruntled Leporello, the abused, loving Donna Elvira—who try to unravel the mystery and ultimately pursue him to his dramatic end. In this course we will follow along with them, enjoying the beautiful music and the comic interplay as we go.
