Excellent Women

Merrill Turner, Ph.D.

Excellent women, according to Barbara Pym’s novel of the same name, are sensible and level-headed, always ready with a cup of tea, living more for others than for themselves. This course will explore fiction written by female authors about these so-called “excellent women,” from Emma Woodhouse to Bridget Jones, and think through how these authors and their protagonists might push back against the confines of their “excellence.”
