Napoleon and Beethoven: A Declining Relationship

In 1838, 25 years after Beethoven wrote the Eroica Symphony, two of his students told a story about why he decided not to name it after Napoleon, and the image of Beethoven, the revolutionary hero, was born. The true story of the symphony is actually more complicated, and more interesting. And the true hero of the symphony is not Beethoven or Napoleon, but the opening theme.
