Philip Guston Now

Alison de Lima Greene

Over a career that spanned five decades, Philip Guston (1913–1980) consistently explored different modes of representation, at times emulating the high polish of Renaissance art, at times subsuming his subjects in a dense web of brushstrokes, at times describing the world around him with the anarchic spirit of George Herriman’s Krazy Kat comics. Alison de Lima Greene, the MFAH’s Isabel Brown Wilson Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and co-curator of the nationally acclaimed Philip Guston Now retrospective will describe the arc of this great American painter’s career, and the ongoing relevance of his profoundly humanist and morally engaged work.

This class will be held onsite at WIH and simulcast via Zoom.
