Political Powerhouses: Famous Texas Women

Nancy Young, Ph.D.

Ann Richards famously quipped in her keynote speech at the 1988 Democratic Convention “If you give us the chance, we can perform. After all, Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels." Or perhaps you’ve heard historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s phrase “well-behaved women rarely make history.” In this class, you will learn about five famous Texans and just how far they pushed boundaries and made history. Dr. Young will use a biographical approach with a mix of women in Congress/national politics, women in state politics, women behind the scenes nationally, and women behind the scenes in Texas.
