Reading Short Stories Like a Writer

Anna Mebel

In this class, we will read stylistically varied short stories with an eye for what we, as writers, can incorporate into our own work. What can we learn about manipulating point of view from Mavis Gallant? About toying with narrative structure from Italo Calvino? About voice from Denis Johnson? We’ll spend the bulk of each class discussing assigned short stories, focusing on how they’re made, and will save the last fifteen minutes for an in-class generative creative-writing prompt. This is an opportunity to dip your toes into creative writing without the pressure of sharing your work. Among others, we’ll read stories by Jamaica Kincaid, Grace Paley, Deborah Eisenberg, Sterling HolyWhiteMountain, and Julio Cortazar.
