Religious Nationalism (2 Week Online Course)

Jill Carroll

The powers of religion and of the state often find each other irresistible. When they combine, like lovers lost in their passion, the result is often a form of religious nationalism. This particular form of nationalism combines the devotion toward a nation with powerful religious symbolism in a way that makes patriotism a kind of divine command. It also defines the nation itself in strident terms - determining who belongs and who doesn’t, who deserves rights and who doesn’t. In the first session of this series, we will have an overview of some powerful historical examples of religious nationalism - and the havoc they have wreaked. In the second session, we will focus on the Christian nationalism that is now burgeoning in the United States, using the latest research from scholars in the field. The goal is for us all to come away with a better understanding of religious nationalism so we can know it when we see it, and respond appropriately.
