Russian Radicals: Dostoevsky's Demons

This course is for anyone who loves literature and wants to learn more of what it can teach us about history. We will read together one of Dostoevsky's great 19th century novels, Demons. We will also consider the history of the Russian Empire at the time, the birth of Russian radicalism in the 1860s, and the conditions that led to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.

Lectures will provide historical context to enrich your reading of the novel. Lectures will also draw attention to particular themes in the novel and allow time for questions and discussion. ISBN for the edition of the novel used in this course: 978-0679734512
