Sacred Sands: How Islam and History Shape the Modern Middle East

Chase Untermeyer

Chase Untermeyer served as US ambassador to the wealthy and influential nation of Qatar from 2004 to 2007. He will share his insights into how the Middle East has been influenced by the religion that sprang from it in the 7th century and by its contentious relationship with the West that began with the Crusades of the Middle Ages. His lecture will tell how the United States came to be involved in a region from which It cannot seem to extricate itself, as much as presidents of both parties have yearned to do so.
