Scoundrels, Sharpstown, and Sorry Sots: A Century of Scandals in Texas Politics (Prerecorded Video)

Brandon Rottinghaus

Texas has had a long and colorful history of political scandals involving public figures up and down the ballot, from the corridors of the White House to the governor’s mansion to the halls of city councils. Texas is not alone in scandalous behaviour, but it is unique: “For virtue,” wrote political journalist Molly Ivins, “try Minnesota.” This sordid history of scandals in Texas has highlighted some high-profile wrongdoing and abuse of power but has also led to significant political reform. This talk examines several major scandals in the Lone Star State and the resulting reforms.
