The Constitution: A Literal Look from a 2024 Perspective

Michelle Helene Belco, Ph.D., J.D.

Join us for a look at the U.S. Constitutional from a more recent perspective with particular focus on some of the key 2023 and 2024 controversies. Although the design of our American system of government seems well settled there are still plenty of challenges over the meaning of a few simple words that have worked their way to the U.S. Supreme Court. You will have an opportunity to refresh your knowledge of the U.S. Constitution while looking behind the scenes to understand recent high-profile controversies over the meaning and interpretations of our nation’s Constitution.

Dr. Belco will begin with a refresher on the history of the U.S. Constitution encompassing some of the famous debates between the Federalists and Antifederalists over the creation of separate institutions sharing powers and dual sovereignty between the states and national government. Building on this foundation, she will investigate current controversies over the meaning of a document ratified in 1788. She will begin with Article I to investigate controversies over the enumerated powers of the legislative branch with an emphasis on the “dormant commerce clause,’ the executive branch with a focus on the “take care” clause, and the judiciary and the meaning of “good behavior.”
