The History of Portraiture and Self-Portraiture: From Antiquity to the Smartphone | Feb 11

Anna Tahinci, Ph.D.

This series of six richly illustrated lectures offers a panoramic overview of art history through the lens of drawn, painted, sculpted, and photographed portraits and self-portraits. We will study concepts representing individualized features in the visual arts across time. Issues of likeness, status, identity, storytelling, and narcissism will be examined from the viewpoints of the artist, the sitter, and the viewer. Iconic examples of drawn, painted, sculpted, and photographed portraits and self-portraits, as well as examples from the permanent collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, will be part of the lectures.
