The Nones

Jill Carroll, Ph.D.

When surveys, polls, or questionnaires ask for people’s religious affiliation, those who check the box labeled “none” have come to be known by their box name: The Nones. The percentage of Americans who are Nones has steadily increased over the last decade and their growing presence in the United States is a factor in the slow but steady slide of Christianity as the dominant religion in the country. Until recently, the Nones have been studied as a singular group and sociologists have gleaned only the most basic information about them, why they don’t (or no longer) affiliate with a religion, and what they actually believe about god, religion, or anything “spiritual”. Recent scholarship, however, is taking a deeper dive into the intricacies of this group and is gleaning a treasure trove of information about this complex group of people. Dr. Carroll is a member of a working group studying the Nones through a grant from the Templeton Foundation. In this session, she will present some of the latest research on the Nones from this working group of scholars. In person and simulcast
