The Politics of Being “Texan”

Brandon Rottinghaus, Ph.D.

Texas pride is everywhere – giant flags flying over car dealerships, music, and pop culture from Bob Wills to Beyoncé, and in classrooms that daily pledge allegiance to the Texas flag. But does a stronger (or weaker) Texas identity affect a person’s politics? Using new 2023 survey data from Texas statewide and Houston city elections, this class examines the impact of Texas (and Houston) identity on issues like abortion, immigration, and the electrical grid to see how “being Texan” (or not) affects the politics and policy of the state.

This class will be held in-person at WIH and simulcast via Zoom. Live streaming includes access to Q&A
