The Sociopolitical History of the Musical

Dominique Royem

Musical theatre has shaped the American cultural landscape for over 100 years. In this course, we will delve into the why and how of this influence over the course of American history. From Gilbert and Sullivan, transplants from across the pond, through the roaring 20s, the depressive 30s, and both World Wars, we will follow the power of the musical all the way to modern day and the advent of the rap musical. We trace the desire to talk about important and serious subjects in the most entertaining way possible!

This class will be held onsite at WIH and simulcast via Zoom.
