Political Acts: Hidden Messages in American Musicals

Dominique Royem

*This class has been postponed from the original published date. Please note the new dates below.

The American Musical is created for mass entertainment, but sometimes the creative team has another ax to grind. In this class, we will delve into the hidden messages that have been packaged in the most entertaining way possible - the musical. We will investigate what each musical is trying to sell us without our knowledge, what that means for the time period it was produced, and what revivals mean now. We will trace the radical, mainstream, and conservative views espoused by your favorite musicals.

Dominique speaks on: The Sociopolitical History of the Musical.

This class will be held onsite at WIH and simulcast via Zoom.
