Worlds Apart: Fallen Angels and Rising Messiahs (4 Week Online Course)

Seymour Rossel

Imagine nonhuman children of God impregnating female human beings and producing a breed of giants! Or consider God’s personally appointed humans promising victory in war as well as a time of peace and reconciliation, where wolves will lie down with lambs. Fallen angels and the rise of Messiahs are interlocking ideas predating our common notions of heaven and hell. Is one idea more mythical than the other? How did fallen angels become devils and satans? When did the search for a human messiah begin? Why were so many messiahs disappointing and “false”?

We begin with the Dead Sea Scrolls, where these ideas take shape in the world before the Old Testament was locked and set, before there were Jewish Christians, and before St. Paul. We will find fascinating parallels in the ancient Near East—in early beliefs in Sumeria and Akkad, in Egypt and in the texts of the Hittites and Babylonians. The Persians enter the scene a bit later, carrying influential ideas of Zoroastrianism. Following a spiritual trail that connects heaven and earth in ever-changing ways, we will delve into these contrasting ideas through texts, archaeology, art, culture, and ritual.
