Immigration Unpacked: Making Sense of the System, the Headlines, and the Human Impact

Ruby L. Powers

This class will offer a timely and accessible look at what’s really happening in immigration today. It will demystify how the system functions—from asylum and family-based petitions to employment-based immigration, immigration court, and ICE detention—while exploring the key agencies and departments that shape immigration policy and enforcement.

We’ll examine current developments at the border, shifts in asylum policy, and the lived realities of those navigating an often complex and changing system. Together, we’ll look beyond the headlines to understand not just the politics, but the people affected—and how immigration policies and practices continue to shape our communities every day.
