Art Appreciation in Action: Discover Houston’s Local Art Scene

Catherine Aquila

Houston has a vibrant and diverse art scene, featuring galleries that showcase a wide range of local and international artists, from contemporary works to classical collections. This course encourages participants to discover their personal artistic preferences, deepen their understanding of art, and explore Houston’s art galleries to connect with gallery owners and artists. Participants will learn how to interpret art and develop skills for building a cohesive art collection. By identifying their personal tastes and values in art, engaging directly with artists and gallerists, participants will gain confidence in their ability to appreciate art, supported by behind-the-scenes insights into the creative process and the art business.

The journey begins at The Women’s Institute with an overview of Houston Art Galleries and a personal art preference assessment. You will fill out reflection worksheets for personal art preference. The next four sessions will be spent exploring various art galleries around Houston. The last session will be back at WIH for a summary of learning objectives, galleries, artists, and artwork viewed. You will have an opportunity to discuss your personal art findings and action items for continued learning.
