Totally 80s: A Musical Romp Through the Decade of Big Hair and Bigger Hits

Dominique Royem, Ph.D.

Crank up the synthesizers and dust off those leg warmers—it’s time for a totally tubular trip through the soundtrack of the 1980s! This class celebrates the decade that gave us new wave, glam rock, punk, power ballads, hip-hop’s rise, and MTV’s birth. Each week, we’ll explore a different genre that defined the era—from the neon pulse of Duran Duran and the electric cool of Prince to the heart-thumping anthems of Springsteen and the haunting poetry of The Cure. We’ll trace how technology (hello, drum machines!) transformed sound, how fashion and attitude collided onstage, and how 80s music still echoes through today’s pop culture. Expect listening sessions, lively discussion, and a few irresistible sing-alongs—because who can resist belting out “Don’t Stop Believin’”?

Whether you lived it, danced to it, or just wish you had, join us for a joyful, high-energy exploration of the music, artists, and unforgettable vibe of the 1980s. Big fun, guaranteed!
