Titian: The “Prince of Painters”

Douglas Erwing, J.D., Ph.D.

Celebrated in his lifetime as the greatest painter of his age, Titian’s extraordinary career spanned the High Renaissance, Mannerism, and the early Baroque. From his early years in Venice to his rise as a favored artist of princes and popes, Titian continually evolved—moving from luminous colors and polished surfaces to a bold, looser style with darker, more expressive tones that would influence generations of artists.

This lecture traces the four major stages of his career, exploring his groundbreaking portraits, dynamic religious works, and poetic mythological scenes. Join us to meet the “Prince of Painters” and discover how Titian’s innovations reshaped the course of Western art.
