Parables of America: Reading Octavia Butler

Jill Carroll, Ph.D.

Octavia Butler’s novels seem eerily prescient given the turmoil in our country today. In Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, Butler presents a United States of America ravaged by late-stage capitalism, environmental devastation, and an authoritarian presidency voted in to “return America to its greatness.” In short, Butler in the 1990s saw the writing on the wall of where we are today. Join us as we read and discuss these two novels written by one of the most powerful fiction writers in US letters.
