Clara and Robert Schumann: A Musical Love Story

David Ferris, Ph.D.

The Schumanns were the ultimate power couple in the 19th-century German music world. Clara was renowned as one of the greatest pianists in Europe, and Robert was a leading music critic and a celebrated composer. They were also the protagonists in a poignant love story, which began when they defied the resistance of Friedrich Wieck—her father and his piano teacher—and ended when Robert became mentally ill and was hospitalized. Their story continues to be told, not only in biographies, but in novels, films, and even children's books. In this course we will explore the story of the Schumanns through a variety of media—their letters and diaries, their fictional and cinematic afterlives, and, of course, the incredible music that they both composed.
