How Paris Became the City We Love
We continue our exploration of Paris’s rich history and wonderful historic monuments. We will follow the transformation of Paris from a medieval city enclosed by walls to a modern city ringed by boulevards. After a brief review of the contributions of King Henri IV to the beautification of Paris (Place des Vosges, Place Dauphine), we will explore the development of the Île St-Louis, the Sun King’s Paris (the Invalides, the Institut de France, Place Vendôme, Place des Victoires), 18th century Paris, capital of the Enlightenment (the Palais Royal, the Place de la Concorde, the Hôtel de la Marine, the Panthéon, period rooms in grand Parisian residences), Paris as epicenter of the Revolution, Napoleon’s imprint on Paris (the Arc de Triomphe, the Arc de Triomphe du Carroussel, the Vendôme column, the rue de Rivoli), urban renewal under Napoleon III & Baron Haussmann, Belle Époque Paris (the Eiffel Tower, the artists & cabarets of Montmartre, the Sacré Coeur, the Art Nouveau glass ceilings of the Printemps & Galeries Lafayette department stores), and some iconic buildings of modern Paris. The lectures will be richly illustrated with photos taken by Professor Kelly and her husband, architect Frank Kelly, during their many trips to Paris.
