Shakespeare on Film

J. Dennis Huston, Ph.D.

This course explores outstanding Shakespeare films, beginning with Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V, the groundbreaking adaptation that redefined Shakespeare on screen. By bringing realism, emotional intensity, and cinematic immediacy to the story of King Henry V and the Battle of Agincourt, Branagh created a Shakespeare adaptation that feels vivid and contemporary. To highlight this breakthrough, we will compare scenes from Laurence Olivier’s version of Henry V. The course concludes with a discussion of Michael Hoffman’s film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream, an enchanting adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies.
