Art -Isms at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Menil | January 27

This course takes students on an artful journey of understanding the style and characteristics of major Art History movements from the 19th century to the present. We will study art movements from Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism all the way to Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, New Realism, Minimalism, Pop Art, and Postmodernism. Emphasis will be not only on stylistic developments, but also on the way artists interacted with the ideas and values of their culture and time. Analyzing artworks from the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Menil will be an integral part of the class.

January 27: 19th Century Art -Isms: Neoclassicism, Romanticism, and Realism
February 3: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism
February 10: Fauvism, Cubism, and the School of Paris
February 17: Surrealism
February 24: Mid-Century Modernism and Abstract Expressionism
March 3: Minimalism, Pop Art, New Realism, and Postmodernism
