Intertwining the personal and the national, this lecture will examine the past century of Ukrainian history. We will begin in the 1920s, discuss the devastating event known as Holodomor in the 1930s, World War II and its aftermath, and on through the Cold War and post-Cold War period to the 2014 Maidan Uprising (“the Revolution of Dignity”), Russia’s aggressive responses to that revolution, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Believing strongly that historical context matters, crucially so in times of war, this lecture aims to fill in some of the gaps that have emerged in media and elsewhere, gaps created by an emphasis on Putin’s state of mind, Putin’s lengthy tenure, Soviet and more recent Russian history, Russia’s war tactics in Chechnya and Syria, Russia’s current war tactics and goals, and Russian state censorship and vast disinformation. Trying to understand the “invader” is laudable, but should not detract from understanding the people and country under attack.
