How to Watch a Film

Sandy Frieden, Ph.D.

Films are more than just entertainment—they are complex works of art, storytelling, and cultural expression. How to Watch a Film is a course designed to deepen your understanding and appreciation of cinema. Through analysis of the tools of cinematography — narrative structure, photography, editing, and sound — you’ll learn to engage with films critically and thoughtfully. We’ll explore how filmmakers use these tools to create meaning, evoke emotion, and persuade you of their message.

Whether you're a casual viewer or an aspiring critic, this course will transform how you experience and interpret movies.
