Hunter-Gatherers and Heinz 57: A History of Food (Prerecorded Four-Part Video Series)

Laura Bland, Ph.D.

“What would great-grandma eat?” Food writer and activist, Michael Pollan, asks this question as a litmus test for “real food” when he suggests we eat “real food, not too much, mostly plants.” But our great-grandparents, and their great- grandparents, lived in a globalized food system much like our own. They grappled with fraudulent food additives, dishonest corporations, and diseased animals; they experimented with ingredients around the world; their governments argued over unscrupulous businesses, exploited workers, and how to feed the poor. In this course we’ll wander from Mesopotamia to McDonalds to understand the history of what we eat and why.
