Modern Musicals | Established Musicals: The Color Purple, Waitress

Dominique Royem, Ph.D.

Hollywood has been a-buzz in the last few years cranking out the movie musical from new concepts (Wonka, 2023), Musicalized movies (Mean Girls, 2023), established musicals (The Color Purple, 2023) or live-action versions of animated musicals (The Little Mermaid, 2023). In this class, we will dive into the mechanisms behind all of these categories, analyze the musical content of each type of show, and figure out what it is about a good movie musical that enchants Hollywood and the modern theatergoer. We will also take a tour of what happens when the musical flops (Cats, 2019)!
