Notre-Dame Cathedral: Past and Present

Lynda Harper Kelly, Ph.D.

Victor Hugo called her “the queen of our cathedrals.” On April 15, 2019 the world watched in horror the collapse of the spire of Notre-Dame, devoured by flames that engulfed the entire roof. In this lecture we will tell the story of Notre-Dame from the inception of construction in the 12th century to the re-opening in December 2024. For the first time in its 860-year history, the cathedral has been completely restored. Limestone walls darkened by the accumulation of grime over the centuries have recovered their original ochre color. Murals that were barely visible before the restoration pop with vivid color. The cleaned stained-glass sparkles. Photographs taken by architect Frank Kelly will illustrate this transformation of the interior.
