Setting the Stage for November 2026 in Texas: the March 2026 Primaries

Mark P. Jones, Ph.D.

This course will provide an overview of the March 2026 Texas Democratic and Republican Party primary elections. It will cover the marquee Republican and Democratic U.S. Senate primaries as GOP Sen. John Cornyn attempts to fend off challenges from Texas AG Ken Paxton and Rep. Wesley Hunt and as top tier Democrats battle to capture their party’s nomination. It will review high profile congressional primaries across the state, with particular attention given to the Houston area where several open and newly redrawn districts have set the stage for the highest level of congressional primary competition in recent memory. Also examined will be other competitive statewide primaries such as the Democratic and Republican Texas Attorney General primaries and the Republican Texas Comptroller primary. Locally, the course will study the Democratic and Republican primaries for positions in Harris County such as county judge as well as other primaries taking place across the Houston metro area. Throughout the course we will draw on recent public opinion surveys, campaign finance reports and other data to better understand the evolution of the different races, with the course concluding with a primary election-recap on March 5.
