How did that republic—so firmly rooted in principles of shared governance, the representative distribution of power, and collective responsibility - that it was the primary model for the founders of the American republic in the eighteenth century - dissolve over the course of a single century? How did a republic with almost 500 years of history behind it mutate into rule by a single emperor? The story of the final century of the Roman republic is a gripping one, full of extraordinary personalities, astounding events, political intrigue, and tales of greed, power, folly, lust, and ambition that still resonate two millennia later. We will move, over the course of six lectures, through the events of that fateful century, keeping our eye as we go on the ways in which the fall of the Roman republic offers lessons for our own times.
