The Impressionist Garden | November 8: The French Artists

Helga Aurisch, Ph.D.

This course explores the magnificent gardens cultivated and painted by Claude Monet, Gustave Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and other leading Impressionists. We will place these works within the rich history of late nineteenth-century French horticulture, a period marked by remarkable innovations in garden design and cultivation.

While France led this artistic and horticultural movement, artists in other European countries – Germany, Austria, Spain, and the Scandinavian countries followed suit, as did the Americans. Through lectures and visual exploration, we will examine the distinctive regional styles that emerged while enjoying some of the most beautiful portrayals of private gardens ever created by the Impressionist masters.
