The Original American Music: The History of Jazz

Dominique Royem, Ph.D.

From the smoky clubs of New Orleans to the concert halls of the world, jazz stands as one of humanity's most vibrant and enduring art forms — and it was born right here in America. This course traces the evolution of jazz from its roots in African rhythms, blues, and ragtime through the swing era, bebop revolution, and beyond. We will explore the lives and legacies of defining voices — Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and more — while examining how jazz both reflected and shaped the cultural landscape of the twentieth century. More than a music history class, this is a story about identity, innovation, and the restless American spirit.
