The Wines of France: A Journey Through Terroir and Tradition

Susan Wang

French cuisine is inseparable from French wine—the two speak a shared language of terroir, tradition, and taste that defines the nation’s cultural identity. This four-session program invites participants on a guided exploration of France’s most celebrated wine regions, revealing how each bottle reflects its landscape, history, and local gastronomy. Each session blends lecture, cultural insight, and guided tastings of two to three wines, tracing the story of France through the glass. From the aromatic whites of Alsace and the festive sparkle of Champagne, to the refined elegance of Burgundy and Beaujolais, and onward to the diverse expressions of the Loire, Bordeaux, and the sun-soaked vineyards of the Rhône, Provence, and Languedoc-Roussillon—participants will experience the full spectrum of French viticulture. Along the way, you’ll learn to decode wine labels and appellations, understand pairing principles, and connect the history of French gastronomy to its living, sensory traditions. Santé!
