Traveling with the Masters: An Artistic Journey Through Italy
Art is everywhere in Italy—not only in the great cultural capitals of Rome, Florence, Milan, and Venice, but also in the smaller, less-traveled cities of Padua, Mantua, Urbino, Cremona, and Arezzo. In this immersive journey through Italy’s artistic heritage, we will travel alongside Giotto, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, and the Bellini brothers, exploring the cities where they lived and worked while discovering the masterpieces they left behind.
Together, we will visit world-renowned collections such as the Uffizi, the Vatican Museums, and the Accademia, while also uncovering extraordinary works tucked away in churches, villas, and intimate local museums that are too often overlooked today.
A special session will highlight the remarkable contributions of women artists, including Sofonisba Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi, and the “Four Women of Bologna,” whose achievements are only now receiving the recognition they deserve. We will conclude by leaping ahead to the 18th century and following the artistic adventures of Canaletto and his rivals through the Venetian lagoon.
This is a travel course rather than a formal study of artistic style or connoisseurship. Along the way, however, we will gain a rich appreciation for the paintings, frescoes, drawings, and sculptures that continue to animate Italy’s cities, villages, and breathtaking countryside today.
