Stormy Weather In the Atlantic – The Growing Rift Between Europe and the USA

Ursula Muenzel, Ph.D.

The amicable relationship between the USA and Europe had been a pillar of post Second World War order. It was an alliance built on shared values and mutual support and trust. Recently though, it faces increasingly stormy weather: Unilaterally and randomly imposed tariffs on European goods, the undermining of the European Union, the erosion of NATO, open interference in internal European political affairs. As if this weren’t enough, Europe has in addition to tackle its domestic challenges: the financial strain of the on-going war in Ukraine, a stagnating economy in major European states, increasing energy and commodity costs, the rise of right-wing, anti-European parties, deftly supported by the former ally across the Atlantic. But the growing tensions can also serve as an awakening call to become less dependent on “big brother”: They drive innovations: For example, Germany is now leading in the technology of nuclear fusion reactors. Companies explore and find new markets. European states, including Great Britain, are collaborating more closely – in the military sector, on IT and in other fields – and they forge new alliances on other continents. The bond between the USA and Europe will certainly loosen, but at the same time it offers the opportunity of a renewed relationship between partners of more equal standing.
