Europe and the "New Sheriff in Town": The Future of the Transatlantic Relationship

Ursula Muenzel, Ph.D.

Just weeks into the new administration, Vice President J.D. Vance’s declaration at the February 2025 Munich Security Conference—“There is a new sheriff in town”—signaled a dramatic rupture in U.S.–European relations. Longstanding transatlantic partnerships were upended by new tariffs on European imports, a National Security Strategy recasting the EU as a rival, and even threats against a NATO member—once unthinkable in an alliance formed to defend Western democracies. With old assumptions shattered, Europe now faces urgent questions about its role in a world without its traditional U.S. ally: What shape will transatlantic relations take? What new alliances will emerge? This lecture explores a pivotal historical moment and examines possible futures for Europe and the Western world.
