Pop Culture, Politics, and the Body: Reading Roxane Gay

Bridget Fernandes

Roxane Gay, born in 1974, is a fourth wave feminist (feminism in the USA from 2012 to the present), writer, professor, and social commentator. In 2014, she released the book Bad Feminist, in which she explores what it means to embrace feminism while acknowledging contradictions and imperfections.

In this course, we will read Bad Feminist and explore its key themes, including intersectionality (defined as an analysis of how race, class, and gender intersect in shaping women’s experiences), the influence of pop culture and media on women’s self-perception, the politics of the body, and the role of personal narrative in understanding broader feminist issues. We will also situate Gay’s work within current feminist and activist movements by engaging with figures such as Tarana Burke (#MeToo), Malala Yousafzai (global education activist), Alicia Garza (Black Lives Matter), and Jessica Valenti (founder of the Feministing magazine).
